What does AI actually do in a trucking operation?
Six places, mostly. Some of them you are probably using already without calling it AI.
Route planning and dispatch
Routing software has suggested paths for years. What is new is that it now reads live traffic, weather, hours of service, and border wait times together, and reworks the plan as the day falls apart. A load that looked fine at 6 a.m. gets flagged at 9 when the 401 backs up or the Ambassador Bridge queue doubles. On the dispatch side, AI ranks which driver should take which load based on hours left, home time, equipment, and where the truck ends up afterward. The dispatcher still decides. The software just does the math on forty moving pieces faster than anyone can on a whiteboard.
Predictive maintenance
Your trucks already broadcast engine data through the ELDs and telematics you run for compliance. AI reads those fault codes and sensor trends and flags the pattern that usually shows up before a failure: coolant temperature creeping up over three weeks, battery voltage sagging on cold starts. Instead of a tow bill and a stranded load two hours from home, you get a work order for the next time the truck is in the yard. Load management and deadhead
Deadhead is where fleets quietly bleed. AI load matching looks at where your trucks will be empty tomorrow, not just where they sit right now, and lines up backhauls before the driver ever delivers. It scans available freight faster than a dispatcher working two load boards and a phone, and it learns which lanes keep sending you home empty. Back-office automation
This is the least glamorous use of AI and the one that pays fastest. A TMS builds the invoice and the driver settlement from loads already in the system, so nobody keys the same load three times; the AI layer some vendors add on top reads rate confirmations and PODs into that record. It pulls fuel purchases and miles by jurisdiction into IFTA prep instead of leaving a shoebox of receipts for quarter end. For cross-border carriers, it keeps CAD and USD straight on the same invoice run. None of this needs a data scientist on staff. It needs a TMS that already holds the data and runs the automation on top of it.
Customer service and check calls
Every dispatcher knows the loop. The broker calls, you call the driver, the driver is on a dock with no signal, the broker calls again. Automatic status updates cut most of it off at the source. Because the TMS already knows the truck's position and ETA through your telematics integrations, updates go to the customer without anyone picking up a phone. Brokers who insist on their own tracking portals will keep insisting, but your dispatcher stops reading GPS pings into a handset. Safety and driver-assist
Forward collision warning, lane departure alerts, adaptive cruise, and cameras that flag hard braking events all run on AI. For a fleet, the value shows up in two places. Coaching, because you can see which drivers consistently follow too close before it becomes a claim. And insurance conversations, because you can show an underwriter real data instead of promises. What AI in trucking is NOT
It is not self-driving trucks pulling into your yard next year. Driverless trucks do haul commercial freight now, on five fixed routes across Texas and Arizona (TechCrunch, May 6, 2026), and they still have no bearing on how a 45-truck fleet running cross-border freight operates today.
It is not a replacement for dispatchers. Dispatch is relationships and judgment, like knowing a certain receiver will hold your driver four hours no matter what the appointment says. AI does not know that. What it kills is double entry and stale data: the load keyed into three systems, the rate confirmation typed in by hand, the position update that was true two hours ago. The dispatcher's job gets less clerical, not less necessary.
And it is not magic. AI is only as good as the data underneath it. A fleet running on paper and disconnected spreadsheets has nothing for the software to read.
How do small and mid-size fleets start with AI?
Not by hiring a data science team. Fleets this size get AI the same way they got GPS tracking: it arrives inside software they already buy. A modern TMS carries the routing help, the load matching, the automated invoicing and settlements, and the maintenance flags as built-in features, and the vendor keeps them current. Your camera and telematics provider carries the safety side. The practical starting point is to pick the problem that costs you the most, whether that is deadhead, breakdowns, or a back office drowning in re-keying, and turn on the feature that answers it. Prove it on that one problem, then expand. A fleet that starts with automated invoicing and settlements usually feels the win within the first billing cycle, because the hours saved are visible on someone's desk.

Will AI take over truck driving jobs?
Not in the planning horizon of a small fleet. Driverless trucks run on five fixed routes in Texas and Arizona (TechCrunch, May 6, 2026), and the 3.58 million professional drivers ATA counted in 2024 (ATA American Trucking Trends 2025, August 28, 2025) are not being replaced by software that plans loads and builds invoices.
