What Are the Different Types of Transportation Management System (TMS)?
There are three main types of transportation management systems (TMS), grouped by who runs them: a carrier TMS for trucking fleets that haul freight, a shipper TMS for companies that ship their own goods, and a broker or forwarder TMS for companies that arrange freight for others. These platforms focus on quoting, margin tracking on each load, booking carriers, generating shipping documents, and paying carriers while billing customers. If you run a brokerage alongside your fleet, look for a platform that handles both sides, so brokered loads and asset loads live in one system.
Cloud-Based vs. On-Premise TMS
Every type above is sold in two deployment models.
